The Ways of the Righteous Project - Gate of Love
- "And you shall love the Lord, your God."
"And you shall love your neighbour as yourself."
Devarim 6:5 & VaYikra 19:18
- Be careful concerning the love of a parent for his children. His great love for them may cause him not to rebuke them and lead them on the right path.
Orchot Tzadikim: Shaar Ha'Ahavah
- Be careful concerning the love of money. One's great desire for money may cause him to be dishonest in business, exploit and steal in order to amass wealth and close his hand to charity.
Orchot Tzadikim: Shaar Ha'Ahavah
- Be careful concerning the love of close relatives. Because of his love he may aid them in their quarrels and not stop to see whether they may have wronged their rivals.
Orchot Tzadikim: Shaar Ha'Ahavah
- Be careful concerning the love of honour. If one loves honour, his deeds will not be for the sake of Heaven. When giving charity, studying Torah or performing other Mitzvot, his motivation will be to receive praise and honour.
Orchot Tzadikim: Shaar Ha'Ahavah
- Be careful concerning the love of pleasure and indulgence. One who gets drunk, frequents banquets and overindulges in other pleasures will forget God.
Devarim 6:11-12
- The love of one's children should be such as to cause him to give thought to leading his children in the ways of justice and to teach them Divine service.
Orchot Tzadikim: Shaar Ha'Ahavah
- The love of money should take the form of loving one's own money so as not to desire that of others and not to be driven to steal or be constrained to accept charity.
Orchot Tzadikim: Shaar Ha'Ahavah
- One's money should also be used to sustain others, to clothe and feed the poor, and strengthen God-fearing Torah scholars.
Orchot Tzadikim: Shaar Ha'Ahavah
- Do not do to others what is hateful to you.
Gemara Shabbat 31a
- One should not quarrel with others and should receive all people with joy and a kind face, for such kindness strengthens love.
Orchot Tzadikim: Shaar Ha'Ahavah
- If a person is entrusted with a secret, he should not reveal it, even if the one who told him the secret angers him.
Orchot Tzadikim: Shaar Ha'Ahavah
- One should give the benefit of the doubt wherever possible.
Avot 1:6
- He who walks with the wise will grow wise
Mishlei 13:20
- Choose as a friend one who will rebuke you when you do wrong and who will teach you to do good, and do not spurn his chastisement.
Orchot Tzadikim: Shaar Ha'Ahavah
- Envy, lust and honour remove a person from the world.
Avot 1:6
- The righteous man eats for the contentment of his soul, but the stomach of the wicked is always lacking.
Mishlei 13:25
- All of the pleasures of the world are nothing compared to the exuberant joy of a loving relationship with God.
Orchot Tzadikim: Shaar Ha'Ahavah
- When one reflects on God's acts and His wondrous creations, and sees through them His infinite wisdom, one immediately loves God and praises Him and feels a thirst to know God.
Psalms 42:3
